The Family Fronek 2019

When Dave and Karlynn Fronek were raising their 4 boys in Edina in the 1980s and 90s they were aware that there was an outdoor bandy rink at Lewis Park, not far from their home. But there was no youth bandy program to speak of then and the 4 boys, Scott, Andy, Todd and Pat, played other sports.

All played hockey in the powerful Edina youth program. Scott became a Minnesota state high school hockey champion with Edina while also playing varsity football and baseball. Andy also was a Edina hockey standout as well as playing varsity baseball . Todd, the tallest of the Fronek brothers, became a forward for the Edina varsity basketball team. Pat played varsity football and baseball. The Fronek brothers definitely hold a solid place in the rich history and tradition of Edina athletics.

All four of the Froneks went to college and then established themselves in various professional fields. Scott, a Civil Engineer, focusing on water and wastewater infrastructure, Andy, a Financial Sales Specialist, Todd, a Patent Lawyer, and Pat, a Software Sales Executive.

They also all became bandy players. Andy was the first, joining Minnetonka Dynamo for the 1995-96 season and making his national team debut at the 1997 world championships in Sweden, ultimately playing in 5 world championships as well as skating for the USA in multiple other international tournaments . Todd, the former basketball player who was also an excellent skater, was next, also beginning his bandy career with Minnetonka Dynamo, in the 1998-99 season, and then skating with the US team in Sweden in November 2000. Pat, the youngest, skated on the bandy ice for the first time in 2002 and ultimately played for the USA in three international tournaments, including two world championships. Scott, the oldest and final Fronek brother to become a bandy player, joined his three brothers on the bandy ice in 2006 after he moved back home to Minnesota.

When Pat and then Scott were beginning their bandy careers they joined Andy and Todd on the Minnesota Blades, an elite league US club formed by US Bandy Hall of Famer Steve Nelson at the beginning of the 1999-2000 season. The four Fronek brothers have skated for the Blades for 13 seasons now, winning the US Championship(The Gunnar Cup) together in both 2008 and 2011.

In the 2017-18 the Fronek brothers were joined on the Blades by cousin Steven Fronek and in the past season, 2018-19,  the Blades added a 6th Fronek, Scott's son Josh, to their roster. Thus, The Blades often had 6 Fronek skaters on the ice at one time, including their entire back line. A seventh Fronek, cousin Will, will be joining The Blades for the 2019-20 season. Two future Blades are Andy's sons Sam and Liam.

Car pooling among the Froneks to The Blades games is common with as many as 5 piling into one car together. In addition to their careers as players three of the Froneks are also referees in the US league, brothers Pat and Andy and cousin Josh. Not surprisingly the Fronek Bandy Family gets along extremely well proving that the family that skates together stays together. They insist though that the rumors that the Minnesota Blades intend to change their name to the Minnesota Froneks has no merit!
