Goldnick Refs and Plays His Way Into History...

And will likely never happen again in Bandy. In the Russian Government Cup, 2002 in Archangelsk, Rob Goldnick played 6 games at left fullback in 4 days for the US. That, however, is not what is amazing. During this same tournament Rob Goldnick also refereed 6 games.

The day of March 21, 2002 stands out in particular. In the  morning Rob and the US played Sweden. In the afternoon Rob and the US played Russia. In the evening, while all the other US players were attempting to recover, Rob reffed the Finland game vs Norway.  He definitely slept soundly that night.

The next morning Rob was back on the ice as left fullback in the US match vs Norway. The same Norway team whose game Rob had reffed the night before. At one point in the game Rob was moving up the ice, following the play. He was hooked around the waist from behind by a Norwegian player. Rob turned to confront the Norwegian and was greeted with a big grin. "You are not the referee now my friend" the Norwegian informed Rob. After this final game Rob took off his skates to examine the blister which had formed on his right heel during the first US game 3 days earlier. He was quite certain he could now see his heel bone. He felt fortunate that there were no signs of gangrene. Not yet. Without a doubt Rob Goldnick playing 6 games and reffing 6 games in 4 days stands as one of the all time greatest feats in the history of bandy.

Rob Goldnick's bandy career began in the mid 1980s when as a 17 year old he skated for the now defunct Olympic Electric team. He then moved on to the equally defunct Arvika. In 1987, at 19, Rob began reffing bandy in addition to playing. For the next 23 years, through 2010, he spent his winter evenings and weekends at the bandy rink. He somehow also pulled off working full time and raising a family. Rob ultimately became Head Referee of US Bandy and in 2001 together with Paul Meehl and John Hedenstrom became the first Americans to referee in the World Championships. Rob also continued to play Bandy. In 1997 he joined the Bandolier. By the time he retired from the Bandolier in 2010 he has won 5 US(Gunnar Cup) championships and 8 North American Cup Championships. In 2004 Rob, together with Paul Meehl, became Head Coach of the USA Women's National Team. He would coach the US Women in 5 world championships from 2004 to 2010. There is no question that Rob Goldnick's bandy career was both long and successful. He stands alone, however, in the annals of bandy, for both reffing and playing multiple games in the 2002 Russian Government Cup. The scar on his right heel is always a reminder.
